Any irritation or inflammation that happens within the esophagus or the tube where food moves from the mouth to the stomach, is called esophagitis. The four types of esophagitis are eosinophilic esophagitis, reflux esophagitis, drug-induced esophagitis, and infectious esophagitis. Diagnosis is made upon a physical examination and or diagnostic tests such as an endoscopy, x-ray, or allergy testing. With proper treatment, most patients with a healthy medical history will see improvement in their condition within two to four weeks.

Causes. The cause of esophagitis is dependent upon what type of esophagitis it is. Eosinophilic esophagitis is the result of an abnormally high amount of eosinophils in the esophagus. This occurs when an allergen triggers an excessive response from the body. Common food allergies can cause eosinophilic esophagitis such as milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, shellfish, tree nuts, and wheat. Reflux esophagitis is the result of GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, a condition that occurs when stomach acids move backward into the esophagus frequently. Drug-induced esophagitis is the result of medication taking without sufficient amounts of water. When some medications stay in the esophagus for longer then they should, it causes inflammation. Infectious esophagitis happens when fungi, bacteria, parasites, or viruses can infect the esophagus and cause inflammation. This type of esophagitis is common in individuals who have a compromised immune system.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer around the world. While men and women can both be affected, breast cancer most often affects women. About 12% of women in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. Every year, almost 270,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women. Early detection can save lives, underlining the importance of knowing the early signs of breast cancer to watch for. The following are six common early symptoms and signs of breast cancer beyond lumps.

Breast lumps. The most recognizable sign of breast cancer is a mass or lump in the breast. These lumps are typically painless and hard but some can be painful. Lumps can come in different sizes and shapes. Normal breast tissue may also feel lumpy. This is why breast self-awareness and self-checks are important to recognize when the shape of the breast has changed or a new lump is developing. It’s important to remember that not all lumps are cancer; these lumps can be caused by several benign conditions like cysts.

Some people experience the eerie feeling of having their stomach feel bloated after eating. Besides being uncomfortable and sometimes painful, the bloating of the stomach can also protrude the stomach and make it appear bigger. The reason for the bloating is the excess liquids, solids, or gas trapped inside the digestive tract. For some people, bloating is simply having a more sensitive stomach that feels pressure when there is nothing abnormal in the stomach. Here are some simple remedies for a bloated stomach that can quickly bring relief.

Probiotics. Probiotics are supplements that contain living bacteria that are beneficial for the digestive tract. Unlike unhealthy bacteria, the beneficial bacteria that live in the digestive tract is responsible for digesting the food and utilizing nutrients from it. The excessive gas formation that can lead to bloating is caused by certain types of bacteria in the digestive tract. When beneficial microflora is cultivated in the gut, the chances of pathological bacteria living there is greatly reduced. Probiotics are a great way to boost and improve the microflora of the intestines to digest food more efficiently. When food is properly digested, residues and undigested food particles are less likely to cause bloating and irritation to the gut lining.

Penile cancer can be scary for any man. But if a patient does research and educates themselves, they can develop questions to ask the specialists and doctors that will be treating them. With this information, they can get a better idea of what they will be facing, what symptoms they might experience, and what kind of treatment there is for them.

Information. Penile cancer is not a common condition that happens when cells mutate and grow exponentially. These cells can join together to form a tumor. There can be penile tumors that are benign, but they need to be tested to make sure. Additionally, penile cancer usually occurs in uncircumcised men. Uncircumcised men still have a foreskin on the penis. This makes it easier for fluids to accumulate in the foreskin, contributing to the growth of cancer cells. Furthermore, this type of cancer is more prevalent in smokers, in men over 60, and in men who have a compromised or weakened immune system.

The lungs and chest cavity are covered by layers of tissue called the pleural space. A pleural effusion is when fluid builds up in these tissues. It is normal to have fluid in the chest cavity for lubrication and facilitating smooth movement, but having too much can be very dangerous. This usually happens as a result of another serious condition. Smoking, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure or contact with asbestos are factors that place a person at higher risk for this condition. Pleural effusion can result in serious complications including damage to the lungs, an abscess resulting from infection, air pockets in the chest cavity and scarring to the lining of the lungs.

Information. The fluid can be separated into two categories, transudate or exudate. Transudate is made up of plasma and is usually caused by conditions such as cirrhosis or congestive heart failure which can create high blood pressure or low levels of protein in the blood. Exudate results from lung infections or cancers and are more difficult to treat. Lung injury, tumors, inflammation or blocked blood vessels are common causes of this type. The fluid can be categorized further as uncomplicated or complicated. Uncomplicated pleural effusions occur when fluid is present but there is no sign of inflammation or infection. Permanent problems are less likely in these cases. Complicated pleural effusions require immediate medical treatment and are caused by infections or inflammation and are much more serious.

Candida is a notorious type of yeast that can grow normally even in the healthiest of bodies. Women in their reproductive ages are known to be the most affected victims of this little problem. Little known to most people, Candida albicans (also referred to as yeast infections) can also affect men. This piece will focus on addressing everything there is to know about the penile yeast infections that affect men.

Information. Yeast infections can also be referred to as thrush, candida, candida balanitis or candidiasis. For women, it enters through the vaginal region. However, it’s obviously a very different situation for men. In men, it attacks the foreskin and the head of the penis. Often, most victims report inflammation on the head of the penis. Usually, candida survives on the skin and mucous membrane. However, if it overgrows, it starts to show symptoms of its presence. Yeast infections can also attack other parts of the body including the mouth and skin. While yeast infections are certainly far more common in women, it’s something that men should also be aware and informed about.

Whether you are planning on having a baby or you’re wondering why you feel different all of a sudden, the idea that you might be pregnant may have crossed your mind. While it’s often too early to tell until you miss your period, there are some signs that pregnancy could be on the horizon for you. Here are five of the most common early signs of pregnancy and how you can tell if you are pregnant before your period is late.

Swollen breasts. Swollen breasts are one of the most common early signs of pregnancy. If your breasts swell within a week to 10 days after ovulation, you might be pregnant. If they are swollen, tender, and they tingle, it’s an even more obvious sign of pregnancy. The one caveat to this rule is you might experience this before your period arrives every month. If this is a normal premenstrual problem for you, it might not be an easy way for you to tell if you’re pregnant. If you don’t always feel your breasts changing leading up to your menstrual cycle, it’s easier to tell when they do. However, this is one symptom that’s more easily noticed when you also exhibit other early signs of pregnancy.

The feet carry a lot of weight each day, and they are often overlooked and under-appreciated. When heel pain arises, however, people quickly remember all their feet do for them, and they want answers as to what is going on. Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the heel, and it’s sometimes unbearable. It’s named for the plantar fascia, which is the tissue that connects the toes to the heel bone. When it becomes inflamed, it causes serious pain in the area.

Information. People who run are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis than anyone else, but that’s not a guarantee that a runner will develop it or that a non-runner will not develop it. Some people choose to ignore the pain caused by plantar fasciitis because it comes and goes. It’s often worse in the morning right when a person wakes up. It’s thought that the tissue becomes more sensitive when it’s not being used, and that the pain subsides throughout the day as a person uses their foot to get around. The first step they take in the morning, however, is often the most painful. When it goes away, people forget it even happened. Ignoring this pain can cause a chronic condition to develop.

Cancer that forms in the squamous cells of the skin and other tissues around the body is called squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer is actually typically not life-threatening, however, in some cases, this type of cancer can be aggressive. When it is not treated, squamous cell carcinoma can grow large enough to begin spreading around the body. Squamous cell carcinoma can develop in any region where squamous cells are present which includes the skin surface, digestive and respiratory linings, and the lining of hollow organs.

One of the most common forms of squamous cell carcinoma is skin cancer. This occurs when there is a mutation in the DNA of skin cells within the top or middle layer of the skin or the epidermis and the dermis. Most often this occurs as a result of built-up skin damage from excessive UVB sunlight or ultraviolet radiation sunlight. This DNA mutation creates abnormal and non-functioning cells that rapidly multiply forming a hard, scaly lump with or without ulceration. The most common places where squamous cell carcinomas of the skin are found include the neck, lips, legs, head, ears, arms, and hands, all of which are not usually covered with clothing. Individuals with fair toned skin, childhood freckling, and excessive cumulative sunburns are at an increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

Some people do not know what a hamstring is. They just know they are easy to pull when running. The hamstrings are the three posterior muscles in the thigh (on the back of the leg) located between a person’s hip and their knee. They consist of the three muscles. These include the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris muscles. Together, they work to bend the leg at the knee and to extend the leg straight behind the body. They are important muscles, but they are susceptible to injury.

Information. Hamstring injuries are infamous for sometimes being very painful, but of course, everyone is different, just as every injury is different. Luckily, there are several easy ways to treat and help prevent them. But what exactly are they? And what exactly happens in the leg during this type of injury? In short, a hamstring injury occurs when one or more of the three hamstring muscles become strained, overloaded, pulled, or even torn. The injury can cause a number of symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to surgery-requiring pain and damage. As these are very common injuries, they are often caused by people over-exerting themselves during sports or not properly stretching before being physically active.
