The Stages of Dementia

Methods to Minimize Effects

Dementia can be stressful and challenging for patients as well as caregivers. There are several ways to minimize the effects of the disease, including communication techniques, behavioral strategies, and treatment by a physician. It's important for patients with dementia to maintain a healthy diet and exercise program, as much as possible, and enjoy mental stimulation in the form of relaxing hobbies like listening to music, board games, and social activities.

Caregivers can better manage the symptoms of dementia in a loved one with the following techniques:

  • Do not attempt to correct, remind, or argue when someone with dementia says something that isn't true or doesn't make sense
  • Use validation therapy to join a loved one in their reality. This can include going along with a scenario, asking open-ended questions, or simply redirecting to a new activity.
  • Behavioral problems are often a reaction to stress, fear, discomfort, or confusion. Focus on "why" to help resolve the problem.
  • Use familiar music and scents. Even in the advanced stages of dementia, familiar scents, items, and music can still evoke positive feelings and calm a loved one. Music a loved one enjoyed during their teenage years and early adulthood are most effective.
