The Stages of Dementia

Prevention Measures

There is no way to absolutely prevent dementia but several factors can significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia at some point. Lifestyle changes are the biggest form of prevention with dementia and other forms of chronic disease.

A healthy, balanced diet reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, both linked to a higher risk of dementia. Regular aerobic exercise is also important as research shows exercise can slow cognitive decline and dementia, possibly by reducing deterioration of the white-matter fibers of the brain that serve as communication pathways. Quitting smoking reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and dementia by preventing damage to blood vessels in the brain and heart.

Keeping the mind active is also an effective preventative strategy. Mental stimulation stimulates new nerve cell connections in the brain and may boost brain plasticity to fight future brain cell loss. There are many ways to maintain brain function, including physical exercise, word puzzles, math problems, hobbies that require manual dexterity like painting or crafts, and socializing. Maintaining social ties, visiting friends, and socializing out of the home have all been associated with a lower risk of dementia.
