Causes of hamstring injuries. Hamstrings are exceptionally susceptible to injury. Almost any athlete would agree. There are countless ways the hamstring muscles can be stretched beyond their limits. These types of injuries commonly occur in soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis players, or participants of other sports or activities that involve a great deal of running and sprinting, particularly with many sudden stops and starts. Runners and dancers often experience hamstring injuries as well. Many doctors believe that poor flexibility and muscle imbalance can also be possible factors in these injuries. But one thing is for sure - once you sustain a hamstring injury, it makes it much easier to experience another, especially if normal physical activity is attempted before full recovery. The muscles require sufficient time to heal and regain strength. It is important to make sure the hamstrings are completely healed before reintroducing exercise or strenuous activity.
