Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (or Triple A)

Causes

The exact cause of an abdominal aortic aneurysm has not been identified. However, the following are possible risk factors:

  • Atherosclerosis: This is due to damage to the vessel as a result of substances accumulating on the lining.
  • Blood vessel disease: This disease can cause inflammation which may make the vessel more prone to an aneurysm.
  • Trauma: Trauma to the abdominal area may affect the vessel and make an aneurysm more likely.
  • Tobacco use: Tobacco may weaken and damage the walls of the aorta, making them more likely to bulge.
  • High blood pressure: High blood pressure can weaken the aorta walls increasing the risk of a bulge forming.
  • Aorta infection: While rare, it is possible for an infection to increase the risk of an aneurysm.
  • Heredity: In some cases, experts believe that abdominal aortic aneurysms may run in families.
