What is Thrush and How to Treat It

Risk Factors

Risk factors of an oral thrush infection are:

  • Weak immune system - Because children's immunity has not picked up completely, it is more common for infants and adults to experience a mouth thrush infection. Some conditions that can suppress the immune system are also responsible for it. This could be HIV/AIDS, diabetes, or treatments for diseases that cause a suppressed immune system like chemotherapy.
  • Vaginal Yeast Infection - Because candida causes both vaginal infections and mouth thrush, the infection can be passed on from mother to baby during birth.
  • Diabetes - Diabetes may cause excess sugar in the saliva providing enough food for the candida to overgrow.
  • Medication - Some drugs like antibiotics and corticosteroids can alter the flora balance within the body causing candida to overgrow.
  • Oral Conditions - Having a dry mouth or wearing dentures can increase the risk of a candida overgrowth.
