Understanding Symptoms and Risk Factors of Esophagitis

Treatment. The way that esophagitis is treated depends on what kind of esophagitis it is and what is causing the symptoms of it. A physician may prescribe medications such as antivirals and antifungals for infectious esophagitis, or they may prescribe medications such as proton pump inhibitors or medications that block the production of stomach acid and antacids for cases of reflux esophagitis. Pain relievers and oral steroids may be prescribed to treat symptoms of pain and inflammation. Eosinophilic esophagitis is treated by eliminating food allergens that trigger the condition such as eggs, milk, soy, wheat, peanuts, shellfish, and tree nuts. Treatment for any kind of esophagitis may include a diet that is low in spicy foods, acidic drinks and foods, and hard or raw foods. Any consumption of alcohol or tobacco should also be avoided. In severe cases, a surgical procedure may be needed to dilate the esophagus in order to treat esophagitis.
