Treatment. There are different types of strokes that may occur. This makes the treatment options differ as well. If you have a stroke that gets caused by a blood clot (ischemic), then doctors will typically use a plasminogen activator to counter this. This medication works to remove the clot and has to be administered quickly after the stroke and symptoms occur. Doctors may also use blood thinners on people who can’t take that medication to try to stop further clotting or remove the initial clot.
