Risk Factors. It’s uncommon for young children to show signs of this personality disorder, but it’s not uncommon for a teen to develop this disorder. Females are less likely to develop this personality disorder than men, but it’s not impossible for women to behave with a narcissistic personality. Traits of this disorder are more likely to develop in children when they are young. They are vulnerable and easily swayed at this age, and they are not yet firm enough in their confidence and their thinking to avoid picking up on the cues given to them in social settings. Parents are who are too protective or who tell their child they are the best of the best rather than teaching them that no one is perfect are the ones who are most likely to instill these narcissistic thoughts in their children.
