Causes. Medical professionals are not yet able to pinpoint what causes this specific type of personality disorder, though they strongly believe it is related to specific outside factors. Environment, neurobiology, and genetics often play a role in how people think, and it’s not out of the question that some people might have personality disorders because of their genetics or environment. For example, a person who is raised by parents who never find fault in their own child, who praise their child without ever disciplining them or reprimanding them, and those who grow up with parents who have a narcissistic personality disorder are more likely to develop the same sense of self-importance. The brain is a complex organ, and some medical professionals believe personality disorders are caused by a poor connection in this area of the brain.
