How to Test Your Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is commonly evaluated at every visit with the doctor. It is a good idea for patients to learn how to take their own blood pressure. This can be done at some grocery stores and pharmacies with an automatic blood pressure cuff. Blood pressure monitors can also be purchased for at home use. The following steps are recommended for testing blood pressure at home.

- Stay calm - Avoid caffeine, tobacco products, and exercise for 30 minutes before taking blood pressure. Empty your bladder and remain seated for 5 minutes before measurements.
- Sit correctly - Keep both feet flat on the floor and back straight and supported.
- Take multiple readings - To avoid mistakes, check more than once.
- Check at the same time every day - Since blood pressure fluctuates, it is best to check at approximately the same time daily.
A doctor is the best person to teach the use of a home blood pressure monitor. When taking blood pressure, it is necessary to move clothing out of the way, and support your arm on a flat surface so the upper arm is at heart level. The bottom of the cuff should be placed directly above the elbow bend. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to determine the results of the reading.
