Keeping an Eye on Your Blood Pressure

High vs Low Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is considered healthy if the numbers are below 120/80. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common problem, affecting over 100 million American adults. However, blood pressure that is significantly below normal should be monitored as well. Both high blood pressure and low blood pressure can cause significant distressful symptoms. The American Heart Association recognizes five blood pressure ranges:

  • Normal - Numbers that are below 120/80 are considered normal.
  • Elevated - When the systolic pressure is between 121 and 129 and the diastolic pressure is normal, blood pressure is considered elevated. Preventative measures should be taken to avoid high blood pressure.
  • Hypertension Stage 1 - Numbers that are consistently between 130/80 and 139/89 indicate stage 1 hypertension. Lifestyle changes and medication may be recommended.
  • Hypertension Stage 2 - Numbers that are consistently higher than 140/90 indicates stage 2 hypertension. Medication will likely be prescribed to control blood pressure.
  • Hypertensive Crisis - This occurs if blood pressure is above 180/120. When a reading is this high, a second check should be performed after five minutes. If readings haven't decreased, contact a doctor immediately.

Generally, lower blood pressure is considered a good thing. However, blood pressure that consistently remains too low can deprive the organs of oxygen. Adults with blood pressure lower than 90/60 have low blood pressure or hypotension. Low blood pressure may be caused by other health issues, including:

  • Heart conditions.
  • Blood loss.
  • Endocrine problems.
  • Severe infection.
  • Dehydration.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Medication side-effects.
  • Anaphylaxis.
