Treatment. There are many effective treatments for gastroparesis and not all of them require intensive medical care. In some cases, a diabetic simply needs to get their blood sugar levels under control. Other people need to modify their diet or lifestyle which may mean giving up alcohol or smoking. Other patients find relief when their doctor prescribes drugs that stimulate their stomach to empty the way it should and decrease vomiting. Only patients with very severe cases of gastroparesis need to be hospitalized. This type of gastroparesis is called gastric failure, and people who have this malady don’t respond to drugs or dietary changes. They made need drugs, fluids and nutrition delivered intravenously, and they may need surgery.
